Art Direction & Research:
An Art Director’s work begins as soon as he
receives a script or screenplay from the director.
While
doing his research, an Art Director has to keep an eye out for “talent” and also study the market and technology
which will help him later in production.
Goal setting is another important
task during research. An Art Director not only sets up his team, he
simultaneously sets a timeframe for tasks to be completed, especially in big
productions which require greater detail, example period dramas.
Creatives: One
of the crucial parts of an Art Director's job is working with “creatives”, helping
to guide a project to a greater level.
During research, an Art Director tries to find key strengths in
an artist, and matches them up with a project that harnesses their strengths
and produces something magical.
The skill comes into learning how to communicate with creatives,
such that while giving them enough information to be successful, enough
guidance and feedback is given in order to make meaningful decisions.
A good Art Director does not make great art; he helps an artist
dig in deep so that they create art better than they thought they had in them.
Approvals & Deadlines: The Art Director also has to do his research
within a stipulated budget set by the producer and deadline set by the
production head or the Director. Research is often a time consuming process
especially when big budget films are involved so the Art Director has to
display is intrinsic knowledge and skill to finish work on time without
compromising on quality of the product.
